J1939 profile family
In the early 1990s, SAE International has developed the J1939 recommended practice specifications. This CAN-based application profile was originally intended for diesel powertrain applications. In the meantime, application profiles for other use cases in commercial vehicles have been added. This includes also e-truck powertrain applications. Following industries have adapted J1939 higher-layer protocols and profiles:
- Agriculture and forestry machines (ISO 11783 series, also known as Isobus),
- Truck/trailer link (ISO 11992 series),
- Maritime electronics (IEC 61162-3, also known as NMEA 2000),
- Body builder network for commercial road vehicles (ISO 25200, formerly DIN 4630),
- Fire-fighting truck gateway (DIN 14704),
- Fleet management system (ACEA),
- Tachograph systems for commercial road vehicles (ISO 16844 series).
The CiA IG J1939 discusses and comments these J1939-based documents. CiA collects and forwards comments and new feature requests on behalf of this interest group (IG) to the responsible associations. Details on current work items and next meetings are provided here.
