A word from the CiA Managing Director

The June issue of the CAN Newsletter magazine focusses on CAN-based networks in “mobile machines”. EU Commission defines that “Mobile machinery” (also known as NRMM: non road mobile machinery) includes a wide range of machinery designed to perform specific operations in off-road environments, such as:
- agricultural machinery (e.g., sprayers, combined harvesters, forestry equipment),
- construction machinery (e.g., lifting and handling equipment, earthmoving machinery, mobile cranes, industrial trucks),
- gardening machinery (e.g., lawnmowers), and
- municipal machinery (e.g., for street cleaning or snow removal).
Occasionally, such machinery needs to travel on public roads to move from one location to the next one. Many aspects of the machinery sector have been harmonized (e.g., functional safety in the Regulation 2023/1230/EU - Machinery). This relates also to body applications (e.g., a truck-mounted crane) on commercial road vehicles – they are also mobile machines. However, ‘road safety requirements’ such as lights, brakes, steering, dimensions, etc., are currently regulated at a national level and manufacturers have to comply with requirements which vary between EU countries. This means, the truck/vehicle gateway units need to comply to different functional safety specifications. We discussed this in detail in the CiA technology day about mobile machines end of April. The presentations have been recorded and are available on CiA’s Youtube channel (see link in the footer).
There are many news articles about CANopen, CANopen Safety, and J1939 products suitable for mobile machinery applications in the June issue of the CAN Newsletter magazine. This includes also some first information about the MiC 4.0 document specifying a J1939-based network to connect a vehicle/carrier unit and up to three machine- or tool-like attachments. CiA is collecting comments on this document and will submit them after observation to the authors.
Of course, the June issue of the CAN Newsletter magazine covers also other topics. One of the articles provides some details on the “Ethernetification of CAN”. It summarizes the ideas of the related specification development within the CiA IG (interest group) “Ethernetification of CAN”. This includes the optional support of MACsec.

SIG radar sensors established
In the SIG (special interest group) inaugural meeting, the participants agreed on the following scope: “This group specifies the profile for radar sensors that are applied in collision avoidance, object detection (2D and 3D), level, velocity, and distance measurement, and other use cases. This includes a mapping to CANopen and J1939 higher-layer protocols and related functional safety protocols.” It is intended to develop a CiA specification series, comprising a Part B (Functional behavior and parameters) as well as a Part C (Mapping to CANopen CC), a Part F (Mapping to CANopen FD), and a Part J (Mapping to J1939). CiA invites all radar sensor suppliers to join the SIG. The next meeting is scheduled on July 9, 2025.
Webinar: Functional safety and CANopen
In a one-hour webinar on June 05 (start 15:00, UTC+2), CiA briefly introduces attendees into functional safety and gives an overview about according solutions for CAN. Speakers also give insights to CiA 319 (CANopen implementation and configuration for safety-related devices) and inform about current status of the EN-50325-5 (CANopen Safety) update. The webinar is free of charge, presentation language is English.

DIN 14700 goes ISO
The DIN standard, specifying a CANopen-based application profile for fire-fighting equipment that can be used also for other rescue vehicles, has been presented to ISO/TC 22/SC 31. The presentation slides are available on request by CiA office. On behalf of DIN/ISO, CiA prepares an official submission to be voted as NWIP (new work item proposal). For detailed questions please contact CiA office. The current DIN 14700 edition was published in March 2025.
Chinese CiA road show on CAN XL
CiA is preparing a road show with three stops in northern, central, and southern China. The topic is the CAN XL ecosystem. CiA is looking for sponsors for these full-day events, showing CAN XL demonstrators or giving a presentation on CAN XL technology. It is intended that this Chinese CiA road show takes place end of this year or beginning of the next year. Interested parties should contact the CiA office.
IEEE 1722 review and comments by CiA
The nonprofit IEEE association updates the IEEE 1722 document, which specifies among other functions the tunneling/mapping of CAN data frames. CiA cooperates with IEEE and comments the IEEE 1722 draft. Interested CiA members should contact CiA office for further information and to register for a comment observation meeting.
