A word from the CiA Managing Director
There are far more than 20 000 pages of CiA profile specifications. They enable the design of interoperable devices. Most of them are mapped only to the CiA 301 classic CANopen application layer and communication profile. In 2023, we will continue to specify mappings to the CiA 1301 CANopen FD application layer and communication profile. Candidates close to be released include the CiA 401 series (generic I/O devices) and the CiA 402 series (drives and motion controllers). The CiA 406 series (encoder) adapting the new device profile specification structure with parameter specification (Part B), classic CANopen mapping (Part C), CANopen FD mapping (Part F), and J1939 mapping (Part J) has been released end of 2022.
After five years, CiA profile specifications are automatically reviewed. This year, the following documents need to be updated editorially and on request also technically:
- CiA 447 application profile for car add-on devices series
- CiA 454 application profile for energy management systems series (partly)
- CiA 455 application profile for drilling machines
- CiA 456 interface profile for configurable network infrastructure units
- CiA 461 profile for weighing devices series
Members and non-members are invited to submit comments and new feature requests to specifications in review. In dedicated cases, CiA organizes workshops to discuss in detail the desired device functionality. This includes also new work item proposals, meaning new profile specifications. Workshops are limited to CiA members and special guests (for example original equipment manufacturers or submitter of comments) with severe demands. In 2023, CiA plans workshops on the CiA profile for measuring devices and closed-loop controllers (in February), CAN in outer space applications (in March), and some more on request of the CAN community. For details, please visit CiA’s website.
In case of new profile demands, CiA also organizes optionally workshops. If you like to have additional CiA profile specifications or you desire to have new features within already released documents, please contact CiA office. We will collect those requests and start the appropriate steps to develop new profiles respectively to improve existing ones.
Call for comments: CiA 462 for item detection devices
CAN in Automation is reviewing the CANopen profile for item detection devices (CiA 462 v. 1.0.0), which is currently available for members as draft specification proposal (DSP). To adapt the document on current requirements, please submit your possible comments by end of February 2023 to secretary(at)can-cia.org.
CiA 443 version 4.0.0 released as DSP
CiA updated the CANopen profile for SIIS level-2 devices specifying interfaces for subsea measurement systems including redundant controllers, different sensors, actuators, valves, etc. For instance, the off-shore platforms for oil production are linked to such underwater measurement equipment. CiA members can download the DSP (draft specification proposal) free of charge from the CiA website.
Nordic Lift Expo 2023 in Stockholm
CiA is going to participate in the Nordic Lift Expo trade show on January 31, 2023. On this meeting place for the lift industry of Nordic countries, manufacturers and users will present their lift-related products and services. CAN in Automation will provide information about CANopen Lift (CiA 417 series) developments. CiA members Host Mobility, Safeline, Schaefer, and Ziehl-Abegg are also part of the fair.
Holger Zeltwanger will be available on the CiA stand 213. To make an appointment in advance, please contact exhibition(at)can-cia.org.
Be a co-exhibitor at CiA joint stand(s)
In 2023, CiA is going to participate in several international trade shows. At the following fairs it is possible to accompany CiA as a co-exhibitor:
- IVT Cologne, June 28 to 29, 2023
- IVT Chicago, August 23 to 24, 2023
- SPS Nuremberg, November 14 to 16, 2023
Interested parties should contact CiA by January 15, 2023 at exhibition(at)can-cia.org.
CiA product panel walls in 2023
Also in 2023, CiA offers to show your CAN-related products at product panel walls, exhibited on CiA’s booths at Embedded World 2023, Interlift 2023, and SPS 2023. Each shown product will be linked to a CiA Product Guide entry, which prolongs the product visibility to the public. To sign up, please complete the respective order form and send it to exhibition(at)can-cia.org.
CAN and CANopen seminars in 2023
The first two online seminars on February 08 (for CAN) and February 09 (for CANopen) are scheduled from 14:00 to 18:00 (UTC+1) including breaks.
CiA’s first onsite seminar is planned on March 30, 2023 (09:00 to 17:00, UTC+1) in Nuremberg (Germany). On this one-day event, CiA presents the topics CAN and CANopen in German language. More details on CiA seminars and registration possibilities are provided here or inquire at events(at)can-cia.org.
CiA webinars 2023
Also in 2023, CiA presents the latest trends in CAN-based networking in form of CiA webinars. The topics derive from issues currently discussed in CiA working groups, from technical inquires received by CiA, or from internal CiA activities.
Upcoming CiA webinars are:
- CAN physical layer on February 15, 2023
- CAN XL ecosystem on March 07, 2023
The entire listing of CiA webinars is available here. For more details or registration, please contact events(at)can-cia.org.
CAN technology evolution
On Youtube, you can watch a video about history and future of CAN technology. Mathias Muth (NXP) and Holger Zeltwanger (CiA) chat about applications and experiences as well as their personal views. Mike van Haare (NXP) moderates the fireside talk.
June issue of the CAN Newsletter magazine is released
The December 2022 issue completes the “history and trends” series written on occasion of CiA’s 30th birthday with articles about ʻCAN in healthcareʼ ʻCAN in non-automotive applicationsʼ as well as ʻCiA’s future and CAN XLʼ. Some application reports give insights into drive control for a robotic manipulator, electric aviation possibilities, and conversion of mixed sensor data to CAN (FD).
ʻSecuring CAN: Introduction to CryptoCANʼ and ʻMobile configuration, service, and diagnostic access to CAN systemsʼ deal with the cybersecurity for CAN. Further topics cover new dynamic parameters of CAN SIC transceivers as well as CAN transceiver fault detection with algorithm. The section with brief news about standards and specifications comprises the issue.
The articles can be downloaded individually or you can download the entire magazine.
