A word from the CiA Managing Director
The ISO 11992-3 standard specifies suspect parameters (SP) and parameter groups (PG) exchanged between a towing road vehicle and a towed vehicle (normally a trailer or semi-trailer). These SPs and PGs are referenced in DIN 4630, the network standard for body builders, a German standard written in English language. DIN 4630 supports a J1939 mapping given in an annex and allows a CANopen mapping, too. CiA provides the CiA 413 interface profile series specifying the CANopen mapping for the in-vehicle gateway unit (IGU). When adapting the ISO 11992-3 SPs in CiA 413-3, some wrong references to the J1939DA (digital annex) given in last edition of ISO 11992-3 were detected. They will be fixed as soon as possible. Interested parties can get a list of correct references.
Additionally, there are some descriptions in the ISO document, which can be misunderstood. The SP and PG specifications are correct, but some of the parameter descriptions are questionable. The CiA 413-3 profile specification is therefore on hold. Additionally, the SIG truck gateway plans to develop a new part of the CiA 413 series, in which the DIN 4630 IGU parameters are mapped to the CANopen object dictionary. DIN 4630 specifies dedicated parameters for body applications, which are currently not supported in the CiA 413 series.
The second edition of DIN 4630 is now under development specifying additional body application units (BAU). This includes BAUs for hook loader and nomadic devices such as wireless connected forklifts, for example. CiA staff is editing the DIN 4630 standard. Interested parties may contact the CiA office, in order to get information on the intended new functions. Some more details on DIN 4630 are available on CiA’s Youtube channel. The SIG fire-fighting and the SIG municipal vehicles are going to identify new feature requests for related BAU interfaces in DIN 4630, e.g. to communicate with the IGU or the telematic gateway unit (TGU). Additionally, the SIGs specify the BAU interface mapping to CANopen. For refuse-collecting vehicles this is done in the CiA 422 profile series.
CiA Workshop: Measuring devices and closed-loop control
In a web-based workshop on February 7 (13:00 to 15:00, UTC+1) it is intended to discuss the new feature requests for the CiA 404 measuring and control systems profile. Discussion topics include also the limited interoperability of CiA 404 devices. An implementation guideline, recommendations for PDO mapping, and a separate CiA profile for simple measuring devices could help to overcome the addressed issues.
In the workshop dedicated for CiA members, non-members may participate on request. For registration, please contact secretary(at)can-cia.org.
CiA workshop: CAN in satellites
CiA organizes a free-of-charge workshop on March 8, 2023 (13:00 to 15:00, UTC+1) to identify profile specifications for CANopen-connectable devices suitable for satellites. Additionally, requirements for radiation resistance of the CAN hardware will be evaluated. In the workshop dedicated for CiA members, non-members may participate on request. For registration and further information, please contact secretary(at)can-cia.org.
CiA 303-2 substituted by CiA 890
The former CiA 303-2 technical report (TR) recommending representation of SI units and prefixes for CANopen profile specifications has been substituted by CiA 890. The CiA 890 applies to all CiA specifications and is no longer limited to CANopen.
CiA documents released as DS
CiA 406 (v. 4.1.0) and CiA 463-B/-C/-F series (v. 1.0.0) were released as draft specifications (DS) and are now available for non-members as part of the CiA specification subscription.
CiA 406 specifies CANopen communication and application parameters for different encoder types. The CiA 463 documents specify the device profile for IO-Link gateways. Parts C and F map the application parameters (given in part B) to CANopen respectively to CANopen FD.
Product panels at Embedded World 2023
CiA members can advertise their CAN products and services on the CANopen panel wall (hall 1, stand 203) at the Embedded World trade show. If interested, please contact exhibition(at)can-cia.org by February 10, 2023.
Seminars in 2023
CiA seminars equip attendees with base knowledge about CAN, CAN FD, and CANopen. An insight into CANopen FD (uses advantages of CAN FD) enables you to assess the possibilities and effort to introduce CANopen FD in your projects. CiA offers following seminars in the beginning of 2023:
- CAN for newcomers (online): February 08, 14:00 to 18:00 (UTC+1)
- CANopen for newcomers (online): February 09, 14:00 to 18:00 (UTC+1)
- CAN and CANopen for newcomers (Nuremberg): March 30, 09:00 to 17:00 (UTC+2)
For registration and more details, please inquire at events(at)can-cia.org.
June issue of the CAN Newsletter magazine is released
The December 2022 issue finalizes the “history and trends” article series reporting about CAN in healthcare, in non-automotive applications, and in the future. The issue comprises CAN applications in a robotic manipulator, electric aviation, and sensor data acquisition, informs about new dynamic CAN SIC parameters as well as transceiver fault detection and provides the latest standardization news. Two further articles concern with (cyber)security in CAN-based networks.
The articles can be downloaded individually or you can download the entire magazine.
