CiA 611 series specifies services and protocols for mapping protocol data units (PDUs) of higher layers to the data field of the CAN XL logical link control (LLC) sub-layer.

• CiA 611-1: CAN XL higher-layer functions — Part 1: Service data unit types (version 2.0.0);
• CiA 611-2: CAN XL higher-layer functions — Part 2: Multi-PDU protocol (version 1.0.0).

CiA 611-1 specifies the usage of the service data unit type (SDT) field of the CAN XL data link layer. The SDT identifies the type of service data mapped to the data field of the CAN XL logical link control (LLC) sub-layer. It defines how a receiving node interprets the VCID field, the AF field, and the LLC data field. The service data is provided by the layer using the CAN XL LLC sub-layer. CiA 611-1 defines SDTs for mapping CAN CC or CAN FD frames but also IEEE 802.3 (MAC frames) into a CAN XL frame.

CiA 611-2 defines a multi-PDU approach which enables to combine protocol data units (PDUs) from multiple sub-layered networks and to transmit them in a single CAN XL data frame. These sub-layered networks can use different network technologies and different CAN-based higher-layer protocols. This multi-PDU approach is in particular suitable for backbone networks.
